FAQ

Questions people ask

Working

How good is the internet?

The Connected Hub in the Community Centre has high-speed broadband and is set up for video calls. Wi-Fi in cottages varies, so check with your host, especially if you need it for calls.

Mobile phone coverage is poor in places, so don't rely on hotspotting from your phone.

How do I book a desk at the hub?

Book through the Connected Hubs website, or email bofindev@inishbofin.com. A desk costs €20 a day and the hub is open on weekdays. If you plan to come in most days, get in touch about a longer arrangement.

Can I take calls and hold meetings?

Yes. The hub has headphones, webcams, a speaker and microphone, and a harbour-view room that can be booked for meetings. Book the whole room if you need privacy for calls.

Staying

Where can I stay in winter?

The hotels and hostel are closed in winter, but self-catering cottages and B&Bs take winter guests. There's no central booking system, so you book directly with each host. Ask about winter availability and weekly or monthly rates.

How long can I stay, and how do I book?

Each place is booked directly with its host, using the contact details on the Stay page. Most are let by the week; for stays of a month or more, ask the owner about a winter rate.

Can I bring my dog?

Some cottages allow pets; check the listing. Sheep graze across the island and much of it is protected for wildlife, so keep dogs on a lead.

Travel

What happens if the ferry is cancelled?

Winter storms sometimes cancel sailings, occasionally for more than a day. Leave a spare day before flights or important appointments, and follow the ferry operator's updates. Talk to your host and your employer in advance about what you'll do if you're delayed.

Do I need a car?

Not on the island. Inishbofin is small and you can walk almost everywhere. If you drive to Cleggan, ask the ferry operator about parking there.

Island life

Where do I buy groceries?

Bofin Grocery is a small island shop in the Community Centre, a couple of minutes from the pier. It sells daily essentials, and you can preorder before you arrive. Contact 089 483 5836 or bofingrocery@gmail.com, and check its listing on inishbofin.com for current opening hours.

For a bigger shop, you can order from SuperValu online, Monday to Saturday, for delivery to the island the next day.

What should I bring?

Good waterproofs and walking boots, a head torch for dark evenings, any medication you need, and a laptop charger and adapters. Binoculars are worth packing.

Where can I eat out in winter?

The hotels close for the winter, so The Beach right at the harbour is the only restaurant open. It's also the pub, and it's open all year. Phone 095 45829. Plan to cook most of your own meals.

What if I need medical help?

A public health nurse (PHN) is on call 24/7 on the island. For anything more you'll need to travel to the mainland, so bring enough of any medication you need for your whole stay.

What other services are on the island?

There's a post office, a library in the Community Centre (open twice a week, on Monday and Thursday from 15:30 to 18:30), the grocery shop, the Connected Hub, and visitor services such as public showers and a washer and dryer at the Community Centre.
